Gospel
Matthew 24:37-44
The Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘As it was in Noah’s day, so will it be when the Son of Man comes. For in those days before the Flood people were eating, drinking, taking wives, taking husbands, right up to the day Noah went into the ark, and they suspected nothing till the Flood came and swept all away. It will be like this when the Son of Man comes. Then of two men in the fields one is taken, one left; of two women at the millstone grinding, one is taken, one left.
‘So stay awake, because you do not know the day when your master is coming. You may be quite sure of this, that if the householder had known at what time of the night the burglar would come, he would have stayed awake and would not have allowed anyone to break through the wall of his house. Therefore, you too must stand ready because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.’
Come, Lord Jesus come.
The word 'advent' comes from the Latin 'adventus' meaning 'coming' or 'arrival'.
The focus of this first Sunday of Advent is on Jesus' second coming in Glory rather than on his first coming among us in humility.
The focus of this first Sunday of Advent is on Jesus' second coming in Glory rather than on his first coming among us in humility.
Are we prepared for the great day of His second coming?
Are we awake and ready for Him?
Or are we too involved in living in this here and now and all the world offers?
Or are we too involved in living in this here and now and all the world offers?
Lord as we reflect on the humility of Your first coming also help us to look with hope confidence and expectation towards Your second coming in glory power and triumph and in the meantime we pray that You would come into our hearts here and now.
Come, Lord Jesus, come.

An Update from the CDSC November 2022
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
We look back on our first Vicariate event, “You are my beloved child” on 22 October 2022, with great appreciation for all those in the Cleveland and South Durham Vicariate for helping to make this such a special opportunity to come closer to our Blessed Lord and be more open to His Holy Spirit. Drawing on our experience of working in partnership with the Bethany Prayer Group, we look forward to working with new partners as we plan our next event in the Northumberland Vicariate. If you are in the Northumberland Vicariate, involved with Charismatic Renewal, and would like to contribute to the planning please let us know on charis@diocesehn.org.uk. Please pray for the success of this next event. A new bespoke training programme for those involved in ministries of healing. The Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle is offering a new bespoke training course for those called to accompany people seeking healing. The revised format of the programme focuses on a Catholic, holistic understanding of what it means to be healed exploring the role of the Sacraments, the prayer life of the Church and the power of the Holy Spirit. It gives a grounding in Scripture alongside practical and spiritual training in the art of accompanying and praying with others. It offers good practice guidelines concerning safeguarding and boundaries and helps individuals discern whether this is what God asks of them. More details are available here. Save the date Following this year’s experience of hosting a Mass for Pentecost at St Mary’s Cathedral, Newcastle, we are pleased to announce that we will be hosting a Pentecostal Mass next year at the Cathedral again on Saturday 13th May 2023 at 1:00 pm. More details nearer the time. CDSC Newsletter We are gathering content again for our next newsletter. Please let us know about any opportunities for people to be more open to the Holy Spirit that you would like us to include under “News from the Diocese”.
Congratulations! Congratulations to Pat Kennedy who has been active in promoting Charismatic Renewal for many years, for being awarded a Papal Medal for her services to the Diocese. The medal will be presented at St Mary’s Cathedral at 10:00 am on Saturday 17th December 2022. CDSC Team Conference I and Frank O’Neill will shortly have the privilege of attending a CDSC Team Conference gathering on 19th and 20th November in Northampton. Bishop David Oakley and the CHARIS Coordinating Team for England & Wales will be sharing an update and discussing with Coordinators from across England & Wales how we are to take the mission of CHARIS to the next level in each Diocese. Please pray for the success of this gathering.
Finally, please pray for the soul of Betty McGurk. Betty was active in promoting Charismatic Renewal from the early days. We take great comfort in knowing that Betty will be praying for us and cheering us on.
God bless,
John
