Gospel
Luke 20:27-38
He is God, not of the dead, but of the living
Some Sadducees – those who say that there is no resurrection – approached Jesus and they put this question to him, ‘Master, we have it from Moses in writing, that if a man’s married brother dies childless, the man must marry the widow to raise up children for his brother. Well then, there were seven brothers. The first, having married a wife, died childless. The second and then the third married the widow. And the same with all seven, they died leaving no children. Finally the woman herself died. Now, at the resurrection, to which of them will she be wife since she had been married to all seven?’
Jesus replied, ‘The children of this world take wives and husbands, but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the dead do not marry because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of the resurrection they are sons of God. And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all men are in fact alive.’
November is the month when we traditionally remember and pray for the dead. Today’s Gospel reminds us of our hope of resurrection and eternal life. This hope is based on the teaching of Christ; based on our faith that we are loved into being by God and held in existence every moment by a love that is stronger than death. Our God is God of the living and not of the dead.
Lord you are a God of the living, we pray that those of our loved ones who have died find eternal life in your living presence and that we may merit ourselves that same eternal life with you. Amen

An Update from the CDSC November 2022
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
We look back on our first Vicariate event, “You are my beloved child” on 22 October 2022, with great appreciation for all those in the Cleveland and South Durham Vicariate for helping to make this such a special opportunity to come closer to our Blessed Lord and be more open to His Holy Spirit. Drawing on our experience of working in partnership with the Bethany Prayer Group, we look forward to working with new partners as we plan our next event in the Northumberland Vicariate. If you are in the Northumberland Vicariate, involved with Charismatic Renewal, and would like to contribute to the planning please let us know on charis@diocesehn.org.uk. Please pray for the success of this next event.
A new bespoke training programme for those involved in ministries of healing.
The Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle is offering a new bespoke training course for those called to accompany people seeking healing. The revised format of the programme focuses on a Catholic, holistic understanding of what it means to be healed exploring the role of the Sacraments, the prayer life of the Church and the power of the Holy Spirit. It gives a grounding in Scripture alongside practical and spiritual training in the art of accompanying and praying with others. It offers good practice guidelines concerning safeguarding and boundaries and helps individuals discern whether this is what God asks of them. More details are available here.
